Update on Muis
It’s like living with a yo-yo! One day Muis is up, the next day she’s down. Gah!
At this precise moment in time, so far so good, thank goodness.
She was really odd at the beginning of the week … I watched her walking around the house and she seemed confused and a bit bewildered about where she was. She’d stand outside a closed door to a room (which she never used to go into) and seemed to wonder why she wasn’t able to go inside – or she’d stand in the middle of the sitting room and look like she didn’t know where she was.
It really was awful to see her like that and I was stressing out about what was happening, thinking that maybe the cancer on her pancreas had travelled up to her brain.
But, thankfully, by midweek, she seemed a lot better. I’m pretty sure it’s because of the fact that she was back on her regular dose of prednisone. She looked so much better, she didn’t have “bags” under her eyes (has anyone noticed how albino ferrets get yellow “bags” under their eyes when they’re ill?!?) and she certainly seemed like she knew where she was going when she was walking around the house. I can’t tell you how relieved I felt seeing her improve but I’m sure any ferret owner who’s had a sick ferret knows what I’m saying!
I hope the melatonin will come soon otherwise I might need to think of getting an Explorer sock and making it into a ferret coat to keep her warm in this chilly weather. Heh heh – can you just see a ferret in a sock? That would be something to take a photo of : )
I wish I were a crafty person so that I could knit Muis a coat but I’m seriously not! All thumbs, no fingers
I’ve also ordered more Traditional Chinese Medicine from OnlinePetHerbs but with this order I’ve asked Kamila if she could add some herbs which will help to stimulate Muis’s hair growth. I don’t ask much, do I (LOL), but fingers crossed the new TCM will help
Despite all the setbacks, I hope I’ll be able to keep Muis going in good health for longer than the original prognosis from my vet – she really is such an adorably sweet old lady and I’m not about to give up on her yet!

Nona.
You have mentioned many times & in many post, that you give your babies TCM’s just wondering what they are & made of. I guess what I’m mostly intersated in is how it benafits our ferrets. It’s some thing I’ve never tried always heard of. After seeing your kids pictures I deffently want to know more about it.
Nona Guess I should of checked out the blog first.
My Fluffy use to do the same thing, she’d just waddle around & look lost.I noticed her doing it mostly just after waking. My heart is with you & Muis that go’s for all of our sweeties that have health problems. Fluffy lived almost 3 mo. longer then they had given her, & yes I had her on prednisone as well as feeding her mostly hot cereal made of her reguar food, which I crushed up as well. They do seem to have a will of their own & I do believe our love for them helps them to keep going.
Hugs & Kiss’s to your gang
A big hug for Muis & her Parents
JC & Gang
Hi JC
Thanks so much for all your good wishes and my gang send many dooks and kisses back to you and your 5
Yes, you’re quite right … they do seem to have a will of their own and sometimes amaze us by how they manage to power on when we think they’re at death’s door.
If ever you want to find a holistic vet, who might be able to offer TCM or acupuncture or whatever, you can go to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association’s site and click on their button “Find a Holistic Vet”.

I was always sceptical about things like TCM, etc, but after my experience with Kaos and how the herbs helped keep her in pretty good health, all things considering, and also kept her going for way longer than my vet thought possible, I am a convert!
However I do check with my vet about the extra stuff I give Muis and she’s happy that there’s nothing there which could harm her so … I live in hope that the extra stuff is actually helping her to live longer and I’m not just deluding myself
I\’ve always heard that confusion and acting \’dazed\’ happens a lot with insulinomic ferrets (a sign that their blood sugar is fluctuating, I think?).
Anyway, best wishes to you and Muis
Thanks so much, Sunny!
Yes, I had another ferret with insulinoma about 8 years ago and the first sign that he had it was that “spaced out” look they talk about.
I was just surprised that it happened to Muis when she was on her prednisone, as I had assumed that the medicine would stop that from happening. Obviously not!
That’s one thing I’ve found that you always learn something new with your ferrets … Muis’s insulinoma symptoms are so different from what CJ went through.
I would prefer not to know as much about ferret illnesses but if we can all help each other with our various experiences, then that can only be a good thing
Hugs to your trio from their friends down under!
I’m so glad to hear that Muis is going better last days..hope you will get the melatonine soon..my fingers are crossed for dear Muis! kisses for her and hugs to you Nona!
Muis sends you, Fritzy & Fred lots of love back, Dada, and she asked me to thank you for all your concern! And I send you all hugs back too
Sending Muis lots of healing thoughts and love from me and my fuzzies.
My two love socks, especially the kind with toes in. They like to snuggle up to them in the hidey hole. Can’t say I’ve tried making a coat, but could be a good idea! I know you can buy little hoody sweatshirts on Ferret couture, so you could try this?
Thanks for the suggestion, Tanya. Much appreciated
I will see what those sweatshirts look like and maybe order one for the old girl. Fortunately we’re in the last month of winter and I’m hoping that she won’t shiver as much once we get into Spring.
She still hasn’t grown back the hair on the large patch they shaved on her stomach when they did the ultrasound so I always try and make my hands warm before I pick her up! LOL!
