The pleasures of recuperating with ferrets :-)
I was ordered by my surgeon to do as little as possible when I came home from hospital so that the repair to my bone would mend and be strong.
Of course, I said. I will lie around in bed and take it easy. I promise!
Well … this was before I realised how much help I was going to get from Seamus and Angus to keep me on my toes
)
The pair of them are totally obsessed with everything I have around me, and I seem to be in a constant state of tug-of-war to keep what is rightfully mine within arm’s length.
For instance … my bottle of soda water cannot stay on my bedside table, within easy reach in case I’m thirsty. The minute Seamus hears me opening the top to have a swig from the bottle, he’s up on the bed, stretching across my arm trying to wrestle the bottle out of my hand. So to keep the peace, I have to put the bottle on top of the chest of drawers which means I have to get out of bed every time I am thirsty.
And pens …. oh boy! Seamus thinks ALL pens should be kept under the sofa so if I’m trying to write things down in my notebook, he comes creeping along under the covers then bursts out into the open to grab my pen and go dancing along the bed before making a mad dash to the sitting room with the pen clenched firmly in his teeth!
Then there’s Angus and his refusal to let me have Monty around my neck. Monty is HIS toy and HIS toy has to be stashed in the wardrobe or, even better, taken to the sitting room and put behind my chair. I can sometimes fool him but for the most part, if he sees Monty around my neck, he’s up on my pillow in a shot and grabs Monty by the nose or tail, whichever is closest, to yank him out from under me.
Restful, isn’t it!?
And there’s now a new object for Angus to obsess over … Philip got me a small folding table to put over my legs when lying in bed and so I can put my iBook on it and work comfortably. I found it was a little too flat so was bending my legs to have it angled towards me, so Philip had a brain wave. We have a neck bag full of wheat, which you can stick in the microwave to heat up then wrap around your neck at the back. He put the bag under the laptop at the back so that it was raised and that was really nifty for me.
Well … Angus just couldn’t let that bag alone. When he realised I was not going to let him take Monty, he concentrated all his efforts into getting the wheat bag.
What a performance!
He’d sneak around where I couldn’t see him then lunge and grab at the bag. I’d then have to grab him and try to extract the bag from his teeth but boy, he wasn’t prepared to let go at any price.
This little lark usually goes on for about an hour every day and it really gets to be a little tiring after a while to try and out-think Angus!!
But for the most part, it is absolutely delightful to have the ferrets around. I bring Kaos up onto the bed and she’s happy to lie next to me for an hour or so. Muis and Kahlua tend to wander up onto the bed and say hello and occasionally Muis will lie down for a little while, just to keep me company.
However, all things considered – I reckon the love and attention I get from my special little ferrets is just what the doctor ordered
