The Marbled Polecat – an amazing mustelid
I am in awe … total awe!
A few days ago I had an email from a lady in Kuwait who asked me if she could send me a photo of her ferret and if I could just tell her what kind it was.
I thought, yes, okay. Maybe it was a strange looking silvermitt, or a very dark sable and so perhaps could have been mistaken for a mink or something but never, ever did I expect to see a picture of a marbled polecat!
Have you ever seen such an adorably weird looking mustelid like this? It is just so cute! Strange, but so incredibly cute!!!
I remember when I first saw a photo of one of these creatures, I thought what a funny looking polecat! I never imagined that someone would actually have one as a pet.
When I wrote back and told her what kind of mustelid she had, I also asked if she would be so kind and describe what her polecat was like as a pet as I really wanted to put that down on my
Mustelid page when I got around to writing about it.
I was thrilled to get a description of how Emo (that’s his name) is super hyper when he wakes up, and how he climbs all over the place, digs, chews stuff, and gets really excited when he sees his owner. It also made me laugh to read how when Emo gets frightened, he arches his back and lets out a stink bomb … and I bet his stink bomb is way worse than any of our boys could do

It seems like Emo is really a ferret at heart and I am so envious that I will never get to have a marbled polecat for a pet. Well, unless we end up living in Kuwait which – at the moment – is not a possibility! LOL!
So, now I have to dip my quill in ink and get cracking with writing about the Marbled Polecat (Vormela peregusna).

Oh Jolene – how lucky that you found one in a pet store. I'm so jealous … no way we'd ever see one here in Australia
Are you planning to take him home?
i've just seen 1 in a pet shop yesterday and its so beautiful. I got the name and went checking on9 about it. Its gorgeous and even looks better in real life !
Hi, just tumbled upon your site actually, (im searching for ferret pets in kuwait)

Hi JC
I was getting information about the marbled polecat to write about and, as I do with all the mustelid pages, I was finding out how to say “Marbled Polecat” in different languages.
I came across a site with the word in Croatian … I know tvor means polecat but I can’t find out what Pjegavi means. I thought marbled, but it doesn’t appear to mean that.
I’ll let you know on the blog as soon as I’ve finished the page … so much to do, so little time ! LOL!
Nadia, the girl in Kuwait, sent me more photos of Emo – he is TINY!!! I thought he would be a big fellah but no, he’s just a little kid. Hahaha! I wonder how old he is – must ask.
Stay tuned …..!
What’s a pjegavi tuor in croatian ?????

Hi there Angela
I have a page about black-footed ferrets on my site
http://www.all-about-ferrets.com/black-footed-ferret.html
so I would be more than happy to link to your site from that page as well as putting the link on here.
Dada – I think he is called Pjegavi tvor in Croatian
Nona.
Angus is a sweetie. Sounds like he likes to to keep you on your toes. Give him a kiss for me.& the rest of the gang. Jc
Hi! Cool ferret blog. I just wrote an article about how wild ferrets in America are endangered and linked to your blog. There are so many as pets now we don’t think about making sure they are saved in the wild.
Maybe you could link back to the article to try to raise awareness?
Thanks!

he is so wonderful!
Hi there Sunny
Thanks, yes, the gang are all thriving (touch wood).
Angus has now decided that the bath mat needs to be stashed behind the chair in the sitting room, but he can’t quite get it there so we’re forever tripping over it!
Gotta love your weasels, eh?
Hope all is well with your lovely little ones too!!
I did a double-take. That is the strangest cutie I’ve seen. Makes me (almost *g*) want one, too!
Hope your crew is well!
Hi JC
You know, if I did have a wish list, I would ask for a pair of every different type of mustelid there is
I am just so fascinated by this species and would love to see the animals in real life, rather than on the internet, but there is no way my wish will ever be granted since – apart from ferrets – we have no other mustelids in Oz. Boo!
(
Oh-h-h!!! He is just beautiful !! Thanks for posting this !!!
Nona . I think your wish list is getting longer & longer. If you had all these beauitful creatures, you'd have to open a Zoo. LOL What kind of Zoo would you call it???? Just picking !!!
He is really different & Beauitful. I've never seen one before.
JC
Hi Nona.
Is it really a ferret??? I'll be waiting to read all about this Marble polecat. hey !! what can I say !!! I learn something new every day here. From pink & gray birds to this LOL
