How long has it been since Seamus chewed through my old washing machine hose? It seems like only a couple of weeks ago when Philip replaced it and I painted it with the foul tasting stuff that the vet gave me then foolishly thought that would be the end of the problem!

Last Thursday I put the washing machine on and after a little while I heard a “different” noise. I went into the laundry and saw a spray of water shooting up from the back of the machine. My heart sank when I realized that Seamus had been at the hose again!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, when Philip got back from his business trip, he went back to the appliance store and got another hose. The guy who sold him the hose thought it was absolutely hilarious but I don’t think Philip was very impressed by the whole event – in fact, he was decidedly grumpy about having to fit yet another hose ;-)

Now, the best thing to do if you have a ferret which obsesses about things is not to get angry. Get creative!

We talked about what we could do then Philip went to Bunnings, a local hardware store, to have a look what there was. He ended up getting a length of swimming pool pipe so that he could slip the washing machine hose inside the larger and harder pipe. He also smeared Deep Heat all over the hard pipe and blocked off the back of the machine with bricks, so that there is no way Seamus can get behind.

So … if anyone has a ferret who loves chewing on washing machine hoses, here is the solution. I am pretty sure we’ve defeated Seamus’s nefarious plans and once again, peace reigns in our household :-D

The old washing machine hose – you can see the teeth marks up in the right hand corner.

The swimming pool pipe which now keeps the other hose out of Seamus’s reach!
