Kaos is doing really well :-)
The vet put her on 0.5ml Benazepril and 0.5ml Frusemid twice a day and it made a huge difference to her – I am so thrilled!
She lost 100g in fluid and that meant that her stomach is now approximately 10″ in circumference, so that’s an inch less than when she had that awful taut belly.
She’s eating and drinking well, licking up her smoothy with gusto and seems to be quite spritely as she wanders around the house so I have every finger crossed that she’ll continue to do well. The vet said that the medicine would work until it didn’t but a friend told me she knows of a ferret with a similar heart condition who’s been going for years so I hope that will be Kaos’ case. Obviously it all depends on the health and stamina of the ferret as to how long it will be before the illness takes its toll but I’m very hopeful as Kaos hasn’t had any problems before so …. we live in hope
I found an online naturopath here in Australia who has dealt with sick ferrets in the past so I filled out a consultation form and paid to get some herbs sent over, which I hope will be beneficial. The lady tells me that it won’t interact with Kaos’ medicine so I will try it out and let you know how she goes.
With a bit of luck and lots of love, we might just keep the old girl going for another couple of years

Oh thanks Bill – I really appreciate your help.
The trouble is that we have really tough quarantine laws here and quite often they won’t let stuff come into the state.
When our daughter was in Montreal, she sent some things over to me and they were knocked back by customs. And even some seeds (like for vegetables or flowers) which are available in the eastern states cannot be sent to Western Australia, because they worry that we’ll get bugs or pests traveling in them!
It’s frustrating but I guess they have a job to do to keep diseases out of the state so we have to grin and bear it!
hey nona
i can understand you being nervous about using herbal remedy’s but they are the raw and basic back bone of the powerful modern medicine used to day. any med has sideffects, check out the web site “herbmed”. it has a lot of info on herbs, uses, history and there side effects and interactions with other meds.
NONA if there’s an herb you need that you can’t find there let me know and I’ll do what ever i can to track it down for you and email you the “herb gardens” and store address’s and any shipping info you may need. there’s a lot of them were i live. and there’s a pretty good chance i can find what you need. just let me know.
..take hart your not alone..
You bet I will, Bill.
I am going to write about Kaos and her treatment for my heart disease page and definitely want to share whatever herbal remedies work.
We are unable to get a lot of things here in Australia, which I know you guys can get in the States, so it makes it difficult and I confess that I am just a little nervous about giving Kaos something which I know nothing about.
However I would like to think that the people who make up these herbs (I think they are Chinese herbal concoctions) know what they’re doing so that it won’t cause a detrimental effect on the girl!
I’ll list them as soon as I get them
hey nona
