36C on Sunday the 11th … 37C for Monday the 12th … and continuing in the 30s till Friday, when there’s a cool change of 27!!

Please people, if you have your ferrets outside in a cage, make sure they’ve got shade and are cool during the week.

Here are some suggestions to keep your ferret/s happy during the coming hot weather …

** Freeze water in 2L soft drink bottles, wrap them securely and put them in their cage so that they have something nice & cool to lie against. Alternatively, get some freezer blocks for the esky and use those instead.

** A small children’s wading pool, cheap from Crazy Clark’s, can be used to let the ferret/s play in – supervised, of course!

** Wet towels and hessian sacks can be used to drap over their cages to keep things cool for them.

** Fill a spray bottle with cold water and give them a burst occasionally. If you find your ferret is not impressed with this, then don’t continue. Some ferrets love having water sprayed on them, others hate it.

Because ferrets don’t sweat, there’s no point in putting a fan by the cage to blow on them. I suppose if you wanted to just let the air circulate, then that’s fine but it won’t actually cool down your ferret/s.

Make sure they have lots of clean, fresh water to drink and if you feed them a natural diet, please make sure you check in their cage daily in case they’ve stashed fresh meat in odd places. You don’t want the meat to go off and cause stomach upsets …!

Keep an eye out for any strange behaviour. If you see your ferret looking lethargic or odd in any way, please take it down to a ferret knowledgeable vet immediately for a check up!

Heat stress kills ferrets — seriously! So please take care of your pets and make sure that they’re completely happy and comfortable in their cage.

Onya! :-)
