First ever litter of ferret kits born in Malaysia!
I recently had an email from Elvin, a fellow ferret lover, proudly announcing the birth of 10 kits in Kuala Lumpur on May 20th.
Unfortunately 7 of the kits didn’t make it through the first couple of days but I’m told that the remaining 3 are going well, so fingers crossed that they continue to grow and get stronger!
The proud parents are Dexter, a silvermitt, and DD, an albino, both 20-months old and both from Holland originally. Elvin said that he and others who are owned by ferrets are thinking about starting up a breeding program so that more ferrets will be readily available for other people in KL.
I think that would be a great idea and thumbs up to Elvin and his friends for wanting to share the joys of ferret ownership with others
Hi to all everyone who are both ferret owners & ferret lovers in KL – next time my husband & I go to Langkawi, I hope we can stop in KL for longer and say hi personally
Thanks so much for sharing the news, Elvin, and I’m looking forward to following the progress of Dexter, DD and the kits!

Hi Alicia
We have a really experienced ferret vet here in Perth – his name is Dave Neck and he’s at Cottesloe Animal Hospital
http://www.cottesloevet.com.au/home/index.cfm
I’m sure that if your vet needed some advice or help for either Insulinoma, or Adrenal disease, or anything else for that matter, Dave would be happy to help. He’s a great vet and does a lot of work with WAFFS and their ferrets.
My albino girl, Muis, has insulinoma at the moment and I am giving her Traditional Chinese Medicine once a day, as well as a liquid called Poly-MVA, as a supplement. She seems to be doing really well and I’m hoping that she will continue to do so for as long as possible. I feel that the prednisone is pretty hard on a little ferret so I’m all for giving my sick ferrets alternative stuff to help them as much as possible.
Hugs to your two from their new friends down under
thanks for sharing this blog. My 2 ferrets are rather old. Although i would love to see more ferrets in KL, the lack of experienced vet and med care is a concern. Don’t get me wrong, my vets have been very supportive and kind to us. But unlike in the US where experienced vets see to prevalent ferret problems like adrenal disease and insulinoma, our vets are not quite there yet. These are the 2 greatest ailments that our fuzzies battle with.
So, inface this, please consider this consequence before we begin massive breeding of ferrets. This applies to all exotic pets which we covet but are not able to provide adequate and proper care for.
Thanks for sharing Ernie’s picture, Karen – he’s a real cutie pie
I know what you mean about not being able to live without ferrets as pets – I don’t think I could either.
It’s just such a shame that even in this day and age people still say, “Eeeeuuuww ferrets! They’re smelly & vicious!” without knowing anything about them.
* sigh *
I hope those new kits make it. It looks like Dexter really is giving out a kiss there. Here’s a picture of my little one. His name is Ernie and he is a dark eyed white. I live in Texas and I could not live without my ferret, so my empathy goes out to anyone that is not allowed to enjoy ferret ownership.
