Ferret table manners, or lack thereof
I am fascinated at how Seamus eats his dry food.
I left a bowl of food and water in our bedroom so that I could keep an eye out on what Kaos is eating and when Seamus decides he’s hungry, he goes to eat out of that bowl rather than the big one in the laundry.
I was watching him this morning … he takes a piece of kibble and drops it into the water bowl, then sticks his snout in to get it, all the while blowing water out of his nose (so it looks!.
He then puts the wet piece of kibble in his mouth and then drops it on the floor next to the dish. Then he’ll eat it.
It’s quite bizarre, and very, very messy as he also seems to stir the water with his nose then takes it out and shakes his head, spraying water all over the floor.
Why????
In all the many years of ferret ownership, I’ve never had one like Seamus and, for the sake of my sanity, I hope I never will again
)
But, despite his bad habits, he is a very sweet young man and I’m so glad he’s part of the family.
Will try to capture all this on film and then you can all see for yourself what shocking table manners he has

I reckon every kind of “mitt” has some sort of “mad-bad-idiotic-naughty” gene which gets passed on from generation to generation!
All my silvermitts have been so naught and they got up to things that none of my other ferrets would ever think of doing
hahaa yes peanut was a silver-mitt
as are boe and Julian. peanut
lived outside and was crazy like
Hanna and seamus, I figured his
mouth might be a little sore from
what ever he last tore in to. OR
more likely he’s in training for
his next adventure. Has he been
eyeing anything lately? I smell
a plot in the making. Please keep
me informed. I’m very curious as to what SEAMUS dose next.
HE would certainly make a model for my ferret-olgy page of strange behavior. good luck
Bill – Seamus is 13 months old and I think he’s dunking his dry food just to be a slob
He’s a big boy and his teeth could chew through bone (or a washing machine hose, for instance!) so he doesn’t have any problems with eating his food.
It’s definitely a game with him and he only does it in our bedroom because I deliberately put the food and water dishes close together for Kaos.
He’s always been a water weasel and loves snorkling in the big water dish in the laundry, so it’s all part of his charm
Your Peanut wasn’t a silvermitt by any chance, was he?
HEY NONA
it’s BILL
How old is seamus again?
IT sounds like seamus is playing
the “Crusoe under water adventure” game. OR is soaking his kibble so it’s easier to chew. try offering him to small bowls one dry and one wet, but with the water drained out. TO see which he prefers, my 2 ferret peanut used to slap his food
around until it got wet, then he would eat it. gees what a mess!
I gave him wet food and he stopped.
