I personally think the sport of ferret legging is ridiculous but it does annoy me to read reports in connection with the story of Frank Bartlett wanting to have a ferret legging competition to raise money for his community’s first responder group.

The guy wants to put HIS ferrets down HIS pants and James McKay, who’s considered to be an authority on ferrets in the UK, reported him to the RSPCA saying that it would cause unnecessary distress to his ferrets.

Hmmm, I’m not sure that’s a fair assumption to make. I’m pretty sure my ferrets wouldn’t be distressed if I shoved them down my track pants but, of course, I wouldn’t do that. Can’t think of anything more ticklish than having Mojo squirming around my ankle :D

However, the thing that got to me were the various comments about this story where they mused about putting …. yes, you guessed it …. RODENTS down one’s pants.

Why oh why is there this misconception of ferrets being rodents?!! God it annoys me that people don’t check their facts before they write about things like that.

We ferret lovers have a hard enough time informing the general public that our favourite pets are not stinky, aggressive animals without having to inform Joe Public that they are nothing to do with the rat family.

Grumble grumble grumble!

However, back to ferret legging. Perhaps it would have made more sense for Mr Bartlett to have organised ferret races for charity, like they did with ferrets from the Bristol Ferret Club. Mind you, I am at a loss to imagine how the ferrets raced against children down plastic tubes. How did they get big enough plastic tubes so that the children could run through them?!?!

Sorry – just my silly sense of humour ;)
