I was asked by one of the readers of this blog if I knew what the latest was about the ferret food recall which was announced in May.

I’ve been checking relevant sites on the Internet and haven’t found anything about the problem written after May 30.

As you may or may not have known, the FDA issued a news release back in May saying that there was a problem with certain batches of 8-in-1 Ferret Ultra-Blend Advanced Nutritional Diet, Net Wt. 20 lbs, UPC 26851 00413, Code: C7072.

The image “http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/21MDZAT3ATL._AA160_.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

8-in-1 was also recalling their Dingo Ferret Chicken Jerky which was sold at Target, PetSmart, and other retailers.

According to associatedcontent.com’s website:

If you are worried that you or your pet has been affected by the tainted Dingo treats, there are some signs to watch for. In humans, some of the symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Salmonella poisoning can also result in more serious conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infection, though these cases are rare. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling any Dingo products to help ensure any bacteria is gone.”

For those of you who want more information, go to the FDA’s Contaminated Feed FAQ as well as their page on Tainted Animal Feed.

There was also a CNN report on dog treats from Wal-Mart testing positive for traces of melamine and gives steps which worried pet owners can take to ensure that they keep their animals safe from tainted food. Although it’s slanted towards dog owners, it’s still worth reading and taking note.

If I find anything else to report, I will make sure I let you know as soon as possible.
