Ferret musings

Well it is really quite cold in Perth at the moment and both Angus and Seamus have their magnificently warm and soft winter coats.  I have been trying to train Angus to lie across my neck when I work at the desk so that he keeps me warm but the little so-and-so refuses to stay still  ;-)
But I must say, his coat is so beautifully soft and silky ... I don't think I've ever had a ferret with such a soft coat.  Seamus's coat is also feeling soft these days but nothing like Angus's. However the girls' coats are nowhere as lush and impressive, poor little lambs.
I wanted to get a decent photo of Angus on the bed yesterday but for some reason he was terrified whenever the camera went click and would fly off the bed into the chest of drawers, then peer out worriedly. What an idiot. I managed to get a couple of pictures of him but unfortunately you can't really see his magnificent coat.
I do wish the boys would come and cuddle at night, like the girls do, but they prefer to stay in the chest of drawers unless they have the urge to get up and start chasing each other around the bedroom at 1 o'clock in the morning!  Then they play chase across the bed, usually bouncing across our heads, before running under the chair where they both find it amusing to scratch furiously at the floor.  Very restful ... not!
It's usually Muis who sleeps with us but the other day I was surprised to find that the little lump lying by my leg was Kahlua.  She's been coming up and lying under the doona most nights this week, which has been great.
However she does have one very weird and annoying habit ... if I put my hand under the blanket to stroke her, she licks my wrist, then gnaws on it before clamping down on it with her teeth.  It's not so much a lick lick lick chomp but more of a lick lick chew chew chew chomp.  Not very restful when she gets going so I usually end up turning away from her and then she'll have a frenzied scratching session on the sheet before settling down and finally falling asleep.  Sheesh!  Silvermitts!  Who'd have 'em ;-)

Wendell the Weasel

Isn't that great!  A cute little kid's book about Wendell the Weasel
and his friend called Wanda.
Wendell seems like quite a hip young mustelid, what with his spiky hair.  I wonder if it's gelled ;-)  He was a very lonely little boy, living in the woods all by himself until he meets up with Wanda.  That's about all I know of the tale.
The author is Jeanne Neumann and she originally wrote the story for her two daughters, then set about looking for a publisher to publish the story.
Once that was achieved, she is now telling the tale of Wendell to primary school kids who apparently are very enthralled about this weasel.
I think it's great to see positive stories about mustelids in kids' books and will certainly be getting this one for Imogen, our granddaughter.
She's always hugging the ferrets when she comes over so I'm keen to reinforce her love of them by trying to get her presents which have something to do with ferrets or their cousins whenever possible :-)

Ferrets and Soldiers

For those of you who've been through my Total Ferret Info page, you'd have seen a reference to Quebec and Imphal, mascots of the Yorkshire Regiment in England, which were mentioned in my Present Day Ferret Achievements section.

I recently had an email from someone who found my site and she gave me her website's URL.  I wandered around then ended up on another website called FERT.  FERT is an acronym for the Ferret Education & Research Trust, an English charity for ferrets.
I was absolutely thrilled to see more information about Quebec and Imphal on that site and there were some really superb photos of the dynamic duo interacting with their soldiers.
I particularly liked this one of them peeking out from between the boots at parade - I wonder how they managed to get the ferrets to stand still and have both their little faces facing the front for long enough to get that shot.  It really is a super pictures.
And then there was this one, which had me chuckling .... I could just imagine what the sergeant major was yelling to ... was it Quebec or was it Imphal? Let's imagine it was Quebec ...
"CORPORAL QUEBEC!  Where the BLAZES have you hidden the insoles to my boots!  I've looked under every bed on the base and can't find them ANYWHERE! You will be cleaning out all the litter trays for the next year if you don't put them back in my boots!"
And Cpl Quebec looks like he doesn't have a care in the world ... litter latrine duties notwithstanding  ;-))
All the photos are the property of Andy Simms, Editor of Solider Magazine, and are copyrighted.

Seamus has turned into a gourmand (from WIKI - "A gourmand is a gourmet, or namely an individual who has a discerning palate, and is a connoisseur of good food.") ... as you can see from the photo, the boy has turned his nose up at the plastic Masterfood mustard container which I spoke about a few weeks earlier.

I had left the Dijonnaise mustard jar and the Heinz ketchup on the dining room table a couple of nights ago after our dinner. Silly me (smacks hand) - how could I be so dumb, knowing what a climber Seamus is.

Ferret vs a Dinosaur :-)

Our eldest daughter, Alexia, asked me if I'd seen the video about the ferrets and the Pleo.

I looked at her strangely. "Huh? Pleo? What on earth is a Pleo?"

She sighed, like only a daughter with a simple mother can sigh. "A Pleo is ..." She thought for a moment, "Mama, remember the Furby?"

I nodded, relieved to hear a familiar word. "Yes, those ugly looking dolls!"

Big daughter gave me a very old fashioned look. "Hmmm, yes, well ... Pleos are the same sort of thing. It's a robot which looks like a week-old baby Camarasaurus."
