Archive for April, 2008

Christos Anesti to all my Greek ferret friends too! And, of course, best wishes to all the other Eastern Orthodox ferret owners for a very happy Easter!

I am sure you'll have all a wonderful day tomorrow and no doubt everyone will remember to wear pants with elastic waistbands so that they can pack all the good things in at lunchtime without trouble! Haha!

This is how I feel right now, having spent the whole day in the kitchen making various goodies for tomorrow ...

Fisher kits born in Minnesota zoo

The zoo in Minnesota has had the first litter of fisher kits for ages, and I'm not surprised everyone there are celebrating. As you can see from the photo, they look very much like mustelid babies (surprise surprise ;-) ) but they also look surprisingly like the little mink baby that was found which I wrote about, don't you think?

Did you know fishers were one of the few animals that could kill a porcupine? Apparently they are pretty good at flipping the porcupines over onto their backs and then killing them by attacking their stomachs. However not all fishers get away with that and several do die from the porcupine's quills.

Ferrets on Britain’s Got Talent – huh???

Much as I love ferrets and think they are the cutest and cleverest little things, I can't for the life of me imagine how one would think that a busyness of ferrets would be good for a show like "Britain's Got Talent"!!!

I mean, what would you get your ferrets to do? I can't imagine the judges, especially Simon Cowell, being impressed at seeing which was the first ferret to find a corner, back into it and lift its tail, for instance. Hahaha - what a thought!

A very lucky mink kit!

I had an email from a lady on April 4, saying that someone had brought in an animal, which was found in a ditch, into the pet store where she worked.

No one else wanted the animal so she took it home to look after, as it was very small and its eyes weren't opened yet. She wasn't sure what it was and described a creature which looked a bit like a ferret but was gray with a white chin and had a smell which was pretty potent.

Ferret Magazine is now online

I'm sure you were aware of the fact that the Ferret Magazine decided against producing a physical magazine anymore and is now being produced online.

I just had a look at the site and am impressed that it's all there, available for anyone to read.  I would have thought that they might have charged a fee for a member's site but no ... you can access all the articles, and also ask the vet (who is Karen Rosenthal) questions about your ferret's health - how good is that?!
But, of course, we all know how quickly ferrets go downhill when they're sick so obviously if you think your ferret is ill, it's best to take it to a vet to get it checked out chop chop.
While on the subject of medical things, I saw they had an article about disseminated idiopathic myofasciitis (DIM).  I lost one of my boys, Otis, to what I'm sure was that in 2006, although at the time it was called Disseminated Idiopathic MYOSITIS - he went from being a big strong boy to weak and thin in a horribly short amount of time and died just 4 months after first showing signs of illness.  It was awful, and at the time there was nothing the vet could do to help him.  I was pleased to see that they now seem to have some sort of treatment for ferrets which have been diagnosed with DIM.
Well, one thing for sure - I'll be bookmarking the Ferret Magazine and checking up on it often :-)
