Had a very funny email from Bill, a ferret lover from Texas, telling me what happened to a friend’s albino a while ago.

His friends had 3 ferrets and one of them, Bonny, had been hand raised and bottle fed so was very close to her owner. Bill was around at their new place to help them paint walls and Bonny had been put away in her pen. The trays of white, yellow, pink and blue paint were placed on the floor and everyone was perched on ladders, ready to get to work.

Bonny was obviously feeling put out that she was put in her pen, away from the action, so what do you think she did? That’s right! Bonny climbed out and went to see what was going on but as she didn’t have a collar and bell, no one knew she was in the room until they heard a splash. Looking down, they saw Bonny climbing out of a can of white paint and weasel wardance her way across the trays with the other colors, getting a rainbow hue on her snowy white coat!! Only another ferret owner could imagine the mayhem!!

Unfortunately the water had been turned off so there was no way they could wash the paint off Bonny at the house so they grabbed Bonny, jumped into the car and drove like mad to the old house. Bill said that Bonny was content to sit on her owner’s lap and bask in all the attention but when he looked closely at her, he was horrified to not only see the blue and yellow streaks of paint were mingling and turning Bonny’s coat green but the paint was beginning to stiffen up her coat.

They knew they had to get the paint off asap so pulled into a car wash and got to work with the water. The paint was still sticking to Bonny’s fur but thankfully a handyman they knew was there and he gave them a pot of Vaseline and told them to slather in over her coat, saying the paint would come out. Sure enough, it worked and with a little help with a comb, they finally got all the paint off her coat. Then they had to get some dishwashing liquid to get the Vaseline out and Bonny was all squeaky clean and paint-free. However the snowy white coat was no more.

Bill said that Bonny looked like she was wearing Joseph’s coat of many colors! I wish Bill had sent me a photo of Bonny as it would have been a sight to behold :) They took Bonny to the vet for a check-up and she was given a clean bill of health, thank goodness. Two years down the track, Bonny is still well and very colorful! I guess the moral of the story is to make sure your ferrets can’t get out to help with the painting when you’re decorating your place!!
