Melatonin--- Just came back from my vet, who said it would be ok to start Icey on it. He's going to call around to other vets in this area for more information on Adrenal gland treatment. I might have to take her to Buffalo to a vet there. My question is to Bill.I found the Melatonin Sublingual 1 mg. was woundering how you get yours to take it????I also found the Melatonin 3 mg.long acting along with the Melatonin 3 mg. with vitamin B-6. I bought them all. Now getting her & the others to take it is what I'm asking.
JC

I go to a health store to get liquid melatonin. My ferrets really like the flavoring and it's easy to give them from a dropper. I give 1mg 8-9 hours after sunrise as well.

Holistic Ferret Forum often talks about Adrenal because many of the natural diet feeders on the forum have adrenal ferrets. They talked a lot about different options for adrenal ferrets in this thread:

http://holisticferret.proboards80.com/index.cgi?board=medicine&action=display&thread=2302

It includes a new treatment used in Europe that is very promising.

Glad to hear Muis is looking better than ever.

hey NONA
it's BILL
I daily use the melatonin sublingual's all the time for all my little ones, as they dissolve completely and are readily absorbed. It works wonders, Boe benefits from it as well and i can tell the difference when they don't get it, it takes 1 1/2 weeks for it to build up in the system before you can start to see the difference.

To Sunnyberra & Nona
Thank you both for your help. I've made another vet appointment for Icey & Zoie this week. I am going to check out the health food store here and see about the tablets also. As for the Poly-MVA my babies seem to have softer coats as well. Zoies coat was always coarse, but seem a lot softer these days. Got to order another bottle.
Many thanks to all
Nona so glad to hear about Cass & her family being ok. JC

Thank you so much for your help with the Melatonin, Sunnyberra. I've forwarded your information to the lady in NY so hope she can work things out to help her ferret.

Good news re Cass - I got an email back from her. She and her family is okay - thank God - but she said the devastation in the area is terrible.

I am just so relieved to know they are all okay.

Again, thanks so much for giving us your input! It's very much appreciated :)

I am so sorry to hear about the fires. It must be horrible not knowing what is happening (my mother had lost two dogs to a housefire when she was a child, and the story has always horrified me).

As for melatonin, I was going to do the tablets (1 mg tab orally 8 hours after sunrise), but I opted for the implant (at my vet it is only $64 for it and it lasts 6 months). Tabs are harder, since ferrets have a more difficult time keeping it regulated in the system. If she is interested in the melatonin, she can ask her vet to order in some (here, the standard is 5.4 mg implants).
If not, she'll need to give the oral dosage 8-9 hours after sunrise everyday.
On melatonin (I use melatonin every fall and lupron shots before spring to try and PREVENT adrenal disease in my guys), Pixie was passed out for about a day and a half, and then she resumed her normal schedule. Her hair was soft and shiny and thick (she had some unrelated-to-adrenal hair issues this winter). So far, she is the only one on melatonin. But all three of my guys are getting the lupron injections yearly.
Hope this [kind of] helps.
Good luck!
