Bendigo bushfires, Poly-MVA & Melatonin
I am so worried about Cass, the lady in Bendigo who has all those ferrets – waking up this morning and reading about the horrors in Victoria and NSW was bad enough, but to know someone who lives in that particular area was awful.
Apparently 50 homes were lost in Bendigo. I have never been there so have no concept what the town is like, nor do I have any idea of where exactly Cass and her family live.
I am just hoping and praying that her house was out of the line of fire and that, despite the storms raging around them, they are okay, as are all their animals. I think she still had about 35 ferrets on her property when we last talked by email, and I have no idea if she was on a farm or in the town itself.
I just can not imagine the horrors of being in a bushfire, of seeing your house go up in flames and worrying about whether your animals are okay or if they were burned. It gives me the absolute jimjams thinking about it.
And then there are all the animals living in the bush … how do they escape the flames and if they get burned, can they be helped so that they don’t die an agonising death? God – it’s so depressing to think about.
I have never been happy living in the bush, being more of a coastal person. Give me a view of the sea and I find it a salve on the soul … so relaxing and very therapeutic.
Here we live about 10 minutes from the Indian Ocean and while we can’t see it from our house, you can almost smell it when the sea breeze blows
Years ago we used to take the ferrets down to the beach early on a Sunday morning and it always amused me to see them digging deep tunnels in the sand! I’d worry about them going too far in and finding the sand collapsing behind them so always had their harnesses on so we could pull them out if that happened! Thankfully it never did.
Speaking of ferrets, Muis is looking terrific these days. She’s still 1.1kg and her fur is fabulously soft, plus her tail – which looked pretty ratty – has filled out too and is also looking good.
She always had coarse fur, ever since she was young, and since being on the Poly-MVA, it’s turned lovely and silky, as have the others. Seamus also had coarse fur and now his is soft, so it must be the stuff I’m giving them.
I was “talking”to another ferret lady who also got Poly-MVA for her gang and she agreed that their poop smelled awful but thought it was because their systems were expelling all the grot. Hopefully once they’ve been cleansed through, their poop will go back to normal.
Now to melatonin …. has anyone put their ferret on melatonin and if they have, could you please let me know how your ferret went on that drug? The ferret lady above thinks one of her girls has adrenal problems and she doesn’t have a ferret knowledgeable vet nearby, so has to “teach” her vet things.
If you could give me any advice to pass on to her, I would be most grateful as she is dreadfully worried about her ferret and only wants to do the best for it.
I’ve given her links to various sites which talk about melatonin but it’s always good to have firsthand information from someone who’s actually given it to their ferret and who can give good advice about that.

Melatonin— Just came back from my vet, who said it would be ok to start Icey on it. He's going to call around to other vets in this area for more information on Adrenal gland treatment. I might have to take her to Buffalo to a vet there. My question is to Bill.I found the Melatonin Sublingual 1 mg. was woundering how you get yours to take it????I also found the Melatonin 3 mg.long acting along with the Melatonin 3 mg. with vitamin B-6. I bought them all. Now getting her & the others to take it is what I'm asking.
JC
I go to a health store to get liquid melatonin. My ferrets really like the flavoring and it’s easy to give them from a dropper. I give 1mg 8-9 hours after sunrise as well.
Thank you so much for your information about the Holistic Ferret Forum, November Kris. Much appreciated
I’ve passed that link on to JC and suggested she might want to join.
Holistic Ferret Forum often talks about Adrenal because many of the natural diet feeders on the forum have adrenal ferrets. They talked a lot about different options for adrenal ferrets in this thread:

It includes a new treatment used in Europe that is very promising.
Glad to hear Muis is looking better than ever.
Thanks so much for sharing your information, Bill!
I will pass your information on to JC and hopefully she’ll be able to help her little one get better asap!
hey NONA
it’s BILL
I daily use the melatonin sublingual’s all the time for all my little ones, as they dissolve completely and are readily absorbed. It works wonders, Boe benefits from it as well and i can tell the difference when they don’t get it, it takes 1 1/2 weeks for it to build up in the system before you can start to see the difference.
To Sunnyberra & Nona
Thank you both for your help. I've made another vet appointment for Icey & Zoie this week. I am going to check out the health food store here and see about the tablets also. As for the Poly-MVA my babies seem to have softer coats as well. Zoies coat was always coarse, but seem a lot softer these days. Got to order another bottle.
Many thanks to all
Nona so glad to hear about Cass & her family being ok. JC
Thank you so much for your help with the Melatonin, Sunnyberra. I’ve forwarded your information to the lady in NY so hope she can work things out to help her ferret.
Good news re Cass – I got an email back from her. She and her family is okay – thank God – but she said the devastation in the area is terrible.
I am just so relieved to know they are all okay.
Again, thanks so much for giving us your input! It’s very much appreciated
I am so sorry to hear about the fires. It must be horrible not knowing what is happening (my mother had lost two dogs to a housefire when she was a child, and the story has always horrified me).
As for melatonin, I was going to do the tablets (1 mg tab orally 8 hours after sunrise), but I opted for the implant (at my vet it is only $64 for it and it lasts 6 months). Tabs are harder, since ferrets have a more difficult time keeping it regulated in the system. If she is interested in the melatonin, she can ask her vet to order in some (here, the standard is 5.4 mg implants).
If not, she’ll need to give the oral dosage 8-9 hours after sunrise everyday.
On melatonin (I use melatonin every fall and lupron shots before spring to try and PREVENT adrenal disease in my guys), Pixie was passed out for about a day and a half, and then she resumed her normal schedule. Her hair was soft and shiny and thick (she had some unrelated-to-adrenal hair issues this winter). So far, she is the only one on melatonin. But all three of my guys are getting the lupron injections yearly.
Hope this [kind of] helps.
Good luck!
