Ai yai yai caramba!!!
Talk about heart attack! One thing ferret owners should always do is go with their gut feeling.
If there is that niggling suspicion that something is not quite as it should be (like – “I haven’t seen one of my ferrets for a while. Mmmm, I wonder if I should check …!”) then do it RIGHT AWAY!!
This morning I was feeling a little stressed out as we let the boys out (they sleep in the bathroom and the girls sleep in our bedroom) and they went ballistic with their playing and chasing and annoying the girls.
I had let the dog out around that time and am usually extremely observant about checking that no ferrets are around my feet when I have the door open.
Anyway, I let the dog back in and then got OJ for us for breakfast. Normally Kahlua, our silvermitt girl, comes flying out of nowhere when she sniffs orange juice and she’ll climb up onto my lap for a lick.
I was aware that she wasn’t around but thought that maybe she was ticked off with the boisterous boys so was sulking in the chest of drawers.
Then Philip went off to work and I saw him off, holding Kaos who was sniffing around the door, and once he left, I continued with fiddling around in the kitchen. I was half thinking, “I should check on Kahlua” but didn’t …. and then I heard this strange stratching coming from the front door.
I opened it, thinking that maybe I had trapped a ferret between the front door and the security door but oh no – nothing like that. Kahlua was outside, on the porch, scratching at the security door to get in!
So much for my careful observations! Obviously she slipped out when I let the dog out earlier and had been roaming around outside until she decided to come back home. Thank GOD she was smart enough to scratch to let me know.
If I had acted on my niggling feeling, I probably would have aged 10 years when I realised Kahlua wasn’t in the house, so in that respect it was just as well I didn’t. HOWEVER – had she not had the brains to come back home, I would have lost about an hour and if she had just wandered off down the street, she could have been anywhere by then.
So … I’m sure no one is as dopey as me but I would again stress to all ferret owners – make sure your ferret cannot get out and if they are roaming around the house and you open doors, keep a sharp eye out to make sure no one slips out!
Fortunately for me, a happy ending! Phew!
