A very lucky mink kit!
I had an email from a lady on April 4, saying that someone had brought in an animal, which was found in a ditch, into the pet store where she worked.
No one else wanted the animal so she took it home to look after, as it was very small and its eyes weren’t opened yet. She wasn’t sure what it was and described a creature which looked a bit like a ferret but was gray with a white chin and had a smell which was pretty potent.
The white chin made me think of a mink, but I thought minks were brown so told her it _could_ be a baby mink but I wasn’t sure.
She wrote back a couple of days later to say that yes, it was indeed a mink kit – she had spoken to a vet who had confirmed it and said it was a little boy. Apparently in her state mink are considered pests so if she handed the little kit in to the proper authorities, they’d euthanize it.
So, this wonderful lady took it upon herself to look after this kit. She’s been feeding it every 2 hours and it has been growing and getting stronger every day.
I had an email yesterday saying how the kit had made one of its “stink bombs” and she was almost knocked over by the smell. Hahaha – all of us ferret owners know about those, don’t we!? I have never met a mink in real life so I have no idea how strong their odor is, but apparently it’s knock-your-socks-off strong!
She was also saying how the little fellow knows when it’s not her who’s feeding him and lets out a little mewing sound with a screech in it, and that he also barks like a little puppy when he’s happy! Funnily enough, just yesterday I was reading some digests from my Pet Mink group and there some people were saying how they missed the barking of the mink kits that they had. How coincidental was that?
She sent me a photo of the little guy – isn’t he just the sweetest little minky??

I’ll keep you posted on how he’s getting on as and when I get more information from this very kind and caring lady.
